NOPD Quickly Arrests Suspects in Armed Carjacking on Gilbert Street

Mairon Avila (DOB: 03/20/2001)

NOPD officers have arrested two suspects in connection with an armed carjacking that occurred in the 4800 block of Gilbert Street.

The victim told police that at or around 11:47 a.m. on August 16, 2018, she was unloading luggage from her vehicle and bringing it inside. The victim advised officers that she left her vehicle running while her daughter was asleep in the back seat. After making several trips from the car to the house, the victim returned to her vehicle and observed an unknown male subject sitting inside of her vehicle. The subject allegedly pointed a gun at the victim and demanded that she remove her daughter from the vehicle. As the victim was removing her daughter from inside the vehicle she observed a second unknown male subject in the driver’s seat. The subjects then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, heading northbound on Gilbert Street.

A short time after, the victim’s vehicle was located in a nearby area by police, along with two black male subjects fitting the description of the perpetrators. Mairon Avila (DOB: 03/20/2001) and a 16-year-old juvenile male were positively identified as the perpetrators in this incident. Officers located the victim’s car keys and cellphones on both subjects.

The juvenile subject was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center and Avila was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center, where they were booked accordingly.

Anyone with any additional information regarding this incident is asked to contact Seventh District detectives at 504-658-6070.
