Two Suspects in Custody, Additional Suspects Sought in Homicide on Mandeville Street

NOPD needs the public’s assistance in identifying additional suspects wanted in connection with a homicide that took place earlier this year.

On January 17, 2017, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Fifth District officers responded to a shooting in the 1600 block of Mandeville Street. Upon arrival, officers located two individuals inside of a SUV who were suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. One of the injured males, Tommie Wimberley (DOB: 12-24-1987), later succumbed to his injuries.

As the investigation progressed, two suspects were identified and arrested in connection with this incident. Investigators were able to identify Damond Scott (DOB: 7-7-1999) and Edwin Ben (DOB:  6/14/1994) as suspects in the homicide.

Scott was arrested for unrelated charges on March 15, 2017, and re-booked at the Orleans Parish Prison on June 7, 2017, for one count of second degree murder and attempted second degree murder. Ben was subsequently arrested and extradited to Minneapolis to face unrelated charges before being identified as a suspect in New Orleans. Edwin Ben is currently being housed in the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Jail. NOPD Homicide Detective Ryan Aucoin and the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office are working together to bring charges of second degree murder and attempted second degree murder against Ben for the January 17, 2017, incident in Orleans Parish.

This investigation is still on-going to identify other participants in this homicide and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Ryan Aucoin at 504-658-5300.
