Speaking to more than 100 New Orleans Job Corps Center students from across the city today (Sept. 21), NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said he is committed to improving the relationship between the police department and youth in New Orleans.

“You see what’s happening across the country,” said Chief Harrison. “People are talking about how police interact with the community. That’s why I’m here partnering with you today. I want you to be able to ask me about anything, but I want you to be able to do that with any member of the NOPD, anytime.”

The Chief’s remarks followed a peace march in and around Comiskey Park that the students held today as part of Job Corps' national student-led anti-violence initiative, Youth 2 Youth, Partners for Peace. Chief Harrison commended the students for tackling the important issue. 

“I want to applaud you for marching for peace,” said Chief Harrison. “A lot of people have marches against violence, but I think the greatest thing is to march for peace.”

Job Corps provides youth with a no-cost education and career technical training program through the U.S. Department of Labor. The students also receive support from community organizations and programs, including NOLA FOR LIFE, Ceasefire New Orleans, and Youth Empowerment Project. 

Chief Harrison encouraged the students to continue to look to role models in the community for help as they develop their job skills and become leaders in the community.

"I am just like you. I grew up in this city I went to the same public schools in this city and I had a lot of people helping me become successful, just like you," said Chief Harrison. I want to be an example to you that anything you put your mind to do you can do it."
