NOPD Mounted Division, Bomb Squad Show Off at 9-1-1 Children’s Day

The NOPD joined other area law enforcement agencies and outreach organizations Friday (Oct.7)  for the Orleans Parish Communications District’s Second Annual 9-1-1 Children’s Day at the Chief Warren E. McDaniels Center, located at 118 City Park Avenue.

9-1-1 Children’s Day was developed to teach children the importance of knowing when and how to dial 9-1-1 using a hands-on, interactive approach.

About 500 students from Benjamin Franklin Elementary, St. Peter Claver, Audubon Charter and Nelson Charter schools attended this year’s event, where they learned the importance of dialing 9-1-1 in an emergency and how the call center and law enforcement handle emergency calls.

The NOPD’s Mounted Division was on hand, with the students getting to see Gypsy the horse close up and ask questions of officers about the horses’ training and diet. Also, the NOPD’s Special Operations Division Bomb Squad held interactive demonstrations of the unit’s robots.

Other presentations included the New Orleans Fire Department’s Safe House and a fire truck, EMS ambulances and the Audubon Institute’s Bugmobile. Lunch and educational giveaways were also included.
