The Pelicans organization hosted the event, which happened Monday night (Oct. 24) at the team's practice facility on Airline Drive. The Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) facilitated the discussion which focused on ideas for solutions to existing challenges regarding crime and policing in New Orleans.

NOPD Officers Maurice Stewart, Marylou Augustin and Darnell Saunders participated in the discussion with Chief Harrison. Harrison said he enjoyed the opportunity to have an open and honest discussion with young people and Pelicans players.

"The kids were very open to talking with us and they talked about the issues and how they felt," he said. "We were able to talk about what's expected of them as community members and what's expected of us as police, and I think we got a lot out of it."

Louisiana State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, New Orleans City Councilmember LaToya Cantrell and Jefferson Parish City Councilmember Cynthia Lee-Sheng were among the law enforcement and local officials who participated in the discussion.

The event follows a string of community engagement events that the NOPD has either participated in or hosted in the month of October including:
