NOPD, SBPSO Arrests Armed Carjacking Suspects Minutes After Incident

The NOPD arrested two suspects minutes after they allegedly carjacked a woman at gunpoint in the Sixth District this morning (May 24, 2023), while a third suspect was arrested a short later by Saint Bernard Parish Sheriff’s deputies.

At about 8:00 a.m., the victim was reportedly approached in the 3800 block of Louisiana Avenue Parkway by an unknown black male armed with a rifle. The subject then allegedly demanded the victim exit her vehicle and leave her purse. The victim complied. The suspect fled in the victim’s black 2011 Jeep Liberty, with a black pickup truck following.

Officers quickly spotted the jeep and attempted a felony traffic stop. The vehicle refused to stop and fled, but quickly became disabled. The two subjects exited the vehicle and fled on foot and were apprehended.  Two firearms were also recovered.

Arrested at the scene were Cairen Jones (black male, DOB: 09-19-2004) and Jacob Jones (black male, DOB: 09-01-2003).

At the same time, additional NOPD officers spotted the pickup truck reported to have followed the stolen Jeep.  The truck entered St. Bernard Parish and, with the assistance of NOPD officers, St. Bernard Parish deputies ultimately arrested the driver of the truck. The driver was identified as Diamond Eugene (black male, DOB: 09-26-2003). During a search, Eugene was allegedly found in possession of the victim’s credit card and a rifle. The pickup truck was found to have been reported stolen out of St. Tammany Parish.

Cairen Jones and Jacob Jones were booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for one count each of simple burglary, armed robbery, illegal carrying of weapons and resisting an officer.

Diamond Eugene was booked by St. Bernard Parish deputies on multiple charges including aggravated assault, resisting an officer, illegal carrying of weapons and illegal possession of stolen things.

Investigation into the incident is active and ongoing. Additional charges are expected

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
