NOPD Investigating Homicide in Second District

The NOPD is investigating a homicide that occurred today (May 31, 2022) on the campus of Xavier University that left one person dead and two injured by gunfire.

At about 11:45 a.m., NOPD Second District officers, Xavier Police and officers working security detail responded to a disturbance and shots fired in the parking lot of the Xavier University Convocation Center, where a high school graduation had concluded. Upon arrival, officers located three gunshot wound victims – two male victims and one female victim. All victims were transported via EMS to a local hospital, where the female victim was pronounced deceased.

Detectives are in the process of gathering information to identify the person(s) responsible for this offense and a motive. Multiple subjects were detained at the scene for questioning. No arrests have been made as of this writing.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will officially identify the deceased victim and cause of death, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

Investigation into this incident is active and ongoing. No additional information is currently available.
