NOPD Rocks Red Noses to Fight Childhood Poverty

Some NOPD officers will be joining local elementary school students TOMORROW (May 17) to get a little silly.

Officers from the Second District will rock red noses with the kids at KIPP Believe Primary at 421 Burdette Street in honor of National Red Nose Day on May 24, 2018.  The fundraiser launched in 2015 is dedicated to ending child poverty, both in the U.S. and in some of the poorest communities in the world.

“There’s no question that poverty and crime are correlated, so these partnerships and interactions with our local children in a relaxed, fun environment are important to us,” said NOPD Superintendent Michael S. Harrison. “Early, positive interactions with law enforcement personnel help set the tone for better relationships with officers in the future.”

NOPD partners with local Walgreens stores for other community outreach activities including the annual distribution of Halloween candy to children in each of the city’s eight police districts.

Non-profit organizations supported by Red Nose Day Fund include the Boys & Girls Clubs of America; Children’s Health Fund; Feeding America; Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; Save the Children and The Global Fund. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match every Red Nose dollar raised via Facebook until June 2, 2018.

Since its launch, Red Nose in the U.S. raised over $100 million and has sold 30 million of the campaign’s iconic Red Noses, positively impacting the lives of more than 8.3 million children living in poverty in America and abroad.

Official Red Nose Day noses are available for purchase at area Walgreens stores.
