NOPD Arrests Third Suspect in Shooting Incident in Fifth District

The NOPD’s Violent Offender Warrant Squad today (May 24, 2018) arrested Shawn “Beans” Nickerson, DOB: 05-19-1990), the third suspect arrested in connection with an incident that occurred on April 27, 2018 near the intersection of St. Anthony and North Derbigny streets.

NOPD VOWS officers arrested Nickerson today in the 7700 block of Mill Street. Nickerson was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a firearm, simple criminal damage to property, illegal use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In addition, Nickerson was also arrested for violation of probation.

At about 12:18 p.m., Fifth District officers and State Police troopers responded to the area for a call of suspicious persons. While at the scene searching for three unknown black males reported as acting in a suspicious matter, officers reportedly heard gunshots in the immediate area and saw three armed subjects fleeing from the location. State Police pursued the three suspects, who fled the scene in an automobile. The vehicle later crashed after exiting Interstate 610 near Franklin Avenue. State Police is handling investigation of the vehicle pursuit.

While NOPD and State Police investigated the reported shooting, investigators were informed of a shooting in the 2400 block of Touro Street. The victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, told police that three armed males wearing ski masks fired guns at him and his friend when the victim sustained the gunshot wound. He was transported via EMS to an area hospital.

As investigation progressed, detectives were able to positively identify the three suspects in this incident as Nickerson, Michael Lewis (DOB: 06-07-1987) and Jason Masters (DOB: 05-15-1989) and obtain warrants for their arrests.

Lewis was arrested on April 30, while Masters was arrested on May 22.
