NOPD Arrests Suspect in Armed Robbery, Carjacking on General Meyer Avenue, Aggravated Burglary on Hayne Boulevard

The NOPD has arrested Leroy Garrett (DOB: 03-31-1980) in connection with an armed robbery that occurred in the Fourth District on May 15, 2018 in the 3500 block of General Meyer Avenue, as well as an aggravated burglary that occurred later that same day in the Seventh District in the 9600 block of Hayne Boulevard.

At about 9:35 a.m., the victim was allegedly sitting in her vehicle when she was approached by a subject armed with an assault-style rifle. The subject – later identified as Garrett – then reportedly entered the victim’s vehicle and ordered her to drive away. The victim said he advised Garrett that she was having problems with the vehicle, at which time Garrett reportedly exited the vehicle and fled to a nearby business.

At that time, a second victim drove his vehicle into the parking lot of the business. Garrett then reportedly exited the business and ran toward the second victim’s blue 2004 Ford Explorer. The subject allegedly pointed the firearm toward the second victim and ordered the victim to exit his vehicle. The victim exited the vehicle, and the subject then reportedly entered the vehicle and drove away from the scene.

Garrett then allegedly used the vehicle to relocate to the 9600 block of Hayne Boulevard, located in the Seventh District. Once there, he allegedly forced his way inside of a residence and discharged a weapon inside of the residence, before taking the resident victim’s cell phone and fleeing the scene.

Garrett was later apprehended as he was seen by an off-duty NOPD officer while reportedly driving the reported stolen vehicle. During execution of a search warrant on the vehicle, detectives discovered an assault rifle, three handguns and the reported stolen cell phone.

Garrett was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for domestic abuse aggravated assault, armed robbery with a firearm, carjacking, two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated burglary, aggravated criminal damage to property, illegal use of a weapon, illegal carrying of weapons and attempted second degree kidnapping.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact Fourth District detectives at 504-658-6040.
