NOPD Reports 50% Drop in Traffic Fatalities; Drone-Assisted Arrest Highlights Strategic Policing

New Orleans - The New Orleans Police Department is delivering measurable results through targeted enforcement and the strategic use of technology, including a 50% reduction in fatal crashes year-to-date.

As of this reporting period, NOPD has recorded 7 fatal crashes resulting in 7 deaths in 2026, compared to 14 fatal crashes and 14 deaths during the same period in 2025.

During the week of March 15–21NOPD’s Motorcycle Platoon conducted directive enforcement operations across multiple districts, focusing on high-traffic corridors and areas with a history of crashes. Officers conducted 153 vehicle stops and issued 868 citations, while also supporting major events such as Uptown Super Sunday and St. Joseph’s Night.

These efforts are data-driven and, in many cases, supported through grant funding; allowing the department to maximize impact while using resources efficiently.

On March 19, members of the NOPD Violent Offender Warrant Squad, working alongside the U.S. Marshals Task Force, arrested 39-year-old Kent Goings, who was wanted for second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder stemming from a September 14, 2025, incident in the 2100 block of South Liberty Street.

While operating in a crowded St. Joseph’s Night environment, officers utilized an on-site NOPD drone to locate Goings within the crowd and coordinate a safe apprehension without incident.

“This is what being brilliant in the basics looks like—focused enforcement, disciplined deployment, and using every available tool to keep people safe,” said Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. “We are being intentional in how we deploy our resources and respond to crime.”

Mayor Helena Moreno, City of New Orleans added, “These are needed efforts to increase traffic enforcement. For too long we’ve heard complaints from the public that some drivers completely disregard traffic laws, including running red lights. Now, this increased enforcement will work to curb that behavior, but most importantly create a safer environment for all of us on the road.”

NOPD remains committed to reducing traffic fatalities and violent crime through continued enforcement, innovation, and community partnership.
