NOPD Reports on Crime Statistics from City Mardi Gras Period

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick today (March 11, 2025) released information regarding arrests made citywide during the City of New Orleans’ recognized 12-day Mardi Gras period (February 21-March 4, 2025). This information was compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit.

Kirkpatrick thanked the many people and partner who assisted the NOPD with security and enforcement during this period to ensure public safety.

“I’d like to thank Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Governor Jeff Landry for their unwavering commitment to our city’s safety,” Kirkpatrick said. “Their successful efforts in securing a SEAR-1 designation for Mardi Gras 2025 elevated our security measures to an unprecedented level, bringing in vital federal support and resources. “To the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department—your dedication and professionalism are the foundation of our community’s safety. Your tireless efforts ensured that our streets remained secure throughout the celebrations.

“I also extend my gratitude to Special Agent in Charge Eric Delaune, Colonel Robert Hodges & the Louisiana State Police and Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson and her deputies. Their collaboration and support were instrumental in our collective success. To all our local, state, and federal partners—this was a team effort, and we couldn’t have achieved it without you.

Kirkpatrick also thanked the community for its cooperation during the carnival season.

“(The community’s) cooperation and resilience were vital, especially as we navigated the challenges posed by inclement weather this season,” she said.

In total, the NOPD saw 435 reported property crimes and 58 reported persons crimes during the listed period. These figures show a marked decrease in comparison to 2024 figures and show the lowest figures since 2019, which is seen as a benchmark year. A comparison reflects as follows:

  • 2025: 435 property crimes, 58 persons crimes, seeing enhanced security and vehicle mitigation in place.
  • 2024: 853 property crimes, 98 persons crimes, seeing a return to longer routes with assistance from partner agencies.
  • 2023: 987 property crimes, 139 persons crimes, seeing a return to longer routes with assistance from partner agencies.
  • 2022: 646 property crimes, 112 persons crimes, seeing shortened parade routes.
  • 2021: 441 property crimes, 116 persons crimes, seeing no parades due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
  • 2020: 926 property crimes, 112 persons crimes
  • 2019: 677 property crimes, 94 persons crimes

Regarding persons crimes, the NOPD saw 58 reported persons crimes during this period in 2025. These include:

  • Three (3) homicide incidents
  • 12 aggravated battery incidents
  • 19 aggravated assault incidents
  • Four (4) aggravated rape incidents
  • Eight (8) simple rape incidents
  • Six (6) armed robbery incidents
  • Six (6) simple robbery incidents

Regarding property crimes, the NOPD saw 435 reported property crimes during this period in 2025. These include:

  • Two (2) aggravated burglary incidents
  • 10 simple burglary incidents
  • Five (5) business burglary incidents
  • 45 vehicle burglary incidents
  • 11 residence burglary incidents
  • 219 theft incidents
  • 93 auto theft incidents
  • 50 shoplifting incidents

During this period in 2025, the NOPD cleared 338 reported incidents by arrest throughout the city. These include arrests for incidents reported before the listed period.

Twenty-eight (28) reported persons crimes cleared by arrest during this period include:

  • One (1) homicide arrest
  • 10 aggravated battery arrests
  • 11 aggravated assault/damage arrests
  • One (1) first/second degree rape arrest
  • Five (5) simple robbery arrests

Sixty-one (61) reported property crimes cleared by arrest during this period include:

  • Four 4) simple burglary arrests
  • Six (6) business burglary arrests
  • 11 vehicle burglary arrests
  • Two (2) residential burglary arrests
  • 16 theft arrests
  • Seven (7) auto theft arrests
  • 15 shoplifting arrests

Of the remaining 222 arrests made during this period regarding other crimes, figures of note include:

  • 14 drug law violation arrests
  • 12 fugitive attachment arrests
  • 31 simple battery arrests
  • 59 domestic simple battery arrests
  • 15 simple criminal damage to property arrests

Regarding weapon-related arrests during this period, the NOPD effected 25 arrests on charges of illegal carrying of a firearm and effected two (2) arrests for illegal carrying of a weapon. Of these, 17 arrests were made along a parade route. A total of 18 firearms were confiscated in these arrests.

Kirkpatrick also thanked all federal, state and local law enforcement partners who assisted the NOPD with security and enforcement during this period to ensure public safety.

“These outcomes highlight the effectiveness of planning, healthy partnerships, and active community involvement,” she said. ”While there’s always room for improvement, I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together this year,” Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

All arrested persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
