NOPD Announces Preliminary Crime Statistics for June 15-21, 2025

The following is a weekly report of citywide crime statistics compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit for the period of June 15-21, 2025.

Notable arrests made

During the listed week, the NOPD also made the following notable arrest(s):

  • On June 18, 2025, a coordinated effort by NOPD and Louisiana State Police resulted in the arrest of Nicholas Ortega (Hispanic male, DOB: 01-18-1992) in the NOPD’s investigation of a homicide that occurred earlier that day in the 21700 block of Chef Menteur Highway. Ortega was arrested in the Second District and booked on one count of second-degree murder. The investigation was conducted jointly between NOPD Seventh District, Homicide Section and Violent Crime Investigative Abatement Team with LSP's Bureau of Investigations, VCAIT and Troop NOLA.

Gun arrests (arrests made under LA RS 14:95 and sub-items)

Year to date, the NOPD has made 138 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. This is a 54-percent decrease compared to 298 arrests made during the same period in 2024.

Gun seizures

Additionally, as of June 16, the NOPD in 2025 had seized 889 firearms in criminal investigations, a 26-percent decrease compared to 1,211 such seizures made during the same period in 2024.
