The NOPD is investigating a fatal accident that occurred this afternoon, (June 2, 2024) at the intersection of South Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue.
At about 2:02 p.m., NOPD First District officers were called to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection. Upon arrival, officers discovered a seven-year-old boy had been ejected from one of the vehicles. EMS arrived and transported the boy to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Through investigation, it was determined that the mini-van the boy was traveling in was headed North on Cleveland Avenue when the driver attempted to cross South Broad. The driver of another vehicle was headed East on South Broad Street and the two vehicles collided in the intersection. Initial reports indicate that stopped in the right lane on South Broad obstructed the view of the driver of the vehicle in which the victim was riding.
Upon impact, the mini-van rotated and slammed into the neutral ground at which time the victim was ejected from a back, side window.
Both drivers stayed on scene to assist in the investigation. The exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
The Orleans Parish Coroner will officially identify the victim and determine cause of death upon completion of autopsy.
Traffic Fatality Investigator Danny Ellis is leading the investigation into this incident.
