NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Police Department has arrested two individuals in connection with the homicide investigation of 20-year-old Shawn Mitchell, which occurred on June 28, 2026, in the 2200 block of Louisiana Avenue.

Through the course of the investigation, NOPD Homicide Section detectives developed probable cause to obtain arrest warrants for Joseph Washington (Black male, DOB: November 9, 2001) on one count of Second Degree Murder (LA RS 14:30.1) and Cameron Thomas (Black male, DOB: June 16, 2003) on one count of Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder (LA RS 14:(25)30.1).

On the morning of July 9, 2026, Washington and Thomas were located and apprehended during a coordinated operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and the New Orleans Police Department.

Thomas was arrested in the 7800 block of Dorsett Drive in New Orleans and was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on the charge of LA RS 14:(25)30.1, relative to Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder.

Washington was arrested in the 4000 block of South Dells Street in Harvey and was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on the charges of LA RS 14:30.1, relative to Second Degree Murder. He will be extradited to Orleans Parish at a later date to face the charge.
