NOPD Arrests Suspect in Cruelty to Juvenile Incident

The NOPD has arrested Zyaire A. Cornelius (black male, DOB: 04-03-2004) in the investigation of an incident on July 12, 2022, in the 3900 block of Dublin Street where a 2-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound.

Around 3:50 p.m. on July 12, NOPD Second District officers received notification of a shooting incident at the location and that a 2-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Responding officers rendered aid and transported the victim to the hospital. As of this writing, the victim was listed in stable condition.

Individuals believed to have been involved in the incident, including Cornelius, were detained for questioning.

Additionally, the search of a vehicle involved in this incident revealed two firearms, one of which was reported stolen.

Upon questioning and further investigation, detectives determined Cornelius to be the perpetrator in this incident and obtained an arrest warrant on one count each of possession of a stolen firearm and for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. Cornelius was subsequently arrested and booked accordingly into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
