Second District Officers Surround, Apprehend Attempted Auto Burglary Suspect

On January 8, 2017, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Second District Lieutenant Jennifer Dupree was driving on South Claiborne Avenue at Lowerline Street when she observed three unknown black males with black hoodies pulled over their faces. The three were pulling on the door handles of a white Toyota Rav4 that was parked on Lowerline St at South Claiborne.

Lt. Dupree made a U-turn and requested additional units to assist her in the area. The subjects were observed running in the 2500 block of Lowerline Street. Additional patrol units and the Canine Unit manned by Officer Brett Pittman arrived on the scene. Officers created a perimeter near a residence where one suspect was observed jumping over the fence. The two other suspects were observed fleeing the scene in different directions on Lowerline.

Officers surrounded the suspect who had crawled underneath the residence, and he surrendered and was taken into custody.

The arrested subject was identified as Tirek Magee (DOB: 12-5-99). Magee was on probation for burglary and was currently being monitored with an ankle monitor.  He was charged with attempted auto burglary, criminal damage, trespassing, probation violations and resisting arrest by flight.

Due to the quick response and team effort from Second District units the suspect was surrounded and apprehended quickly.

If you have any information about this incident or the whereabouts of the remaining two suspects please contact any Second District detective at 504-658-6020. Citizens with information that can help solve crimes are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.

2. Close windows and sunroofs

3. Don’t leave valuables such as laptops, cell phones, wallets, purses or GPS devices in plain view

4. Put away the garage door opener and any items with personal information

5. Move valuables to the trunk before reaching your destination

6. Don’t leave keys in the vehicle
