NOPD Seeking Information to Assist in Homicide Investigation

NOTE: As the victim in this incident is not a resident of the area and has not been found to have any associates or family members in the area, NOPD is releasing the victim’s identity and photo to help develop any possible leads on his whereabouts or dealings leading up to this incident.

The NOPD is requesting the public’s assistance with information that can assist in the ongoing investigation of a homicide that occurred on January 17, 2023, in the 4400 block of Reynes Street and left one person dead.

At about 12:36 a.m. on January 17, NOPD Seventh District officers were dispatched to a medical call at the location. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive white male lying in the street. The victim was found to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene for treatment, and the victim was later pronounced deceased.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives positively identified the victim as Janis Gailis (pictured, white male, DOB: 04-20-1992). Gailis had reportedly been in the city for several months visiting from out of the country.

As the victim is not a resident of the area and has not been found to have any associates or family members in the area, NOPD is releasing the victim’s identity and photo in this case to help develop any possible leads on his whereabouts or dealings leading up to this incident.

Detectives are seeking any information regarding Gailis’ activities or associations leading up to this incident, as well as information on the perpetrator(s) in the incident.

Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Homicide Det. Walter Edmond at 504-658-5300. Those wishing to report information anonymously can do so by calling Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
