NOPD Mourns Loss of Detective Gregory Hamilton

The NOPD mourns the loss of 26-year department veteran and Homicide Unit Detective Gregory Hamilton, who passed away peacefully at his home in Harvey, La. on January 15, 2021 at the age of 64.

After graduating high school and serving in the U.S. Army, Hamilton joined the NOPD in 1994. He served his first four years as a patrol officer in the Fifth District, before moving into the position of detective in 1998. He was assigned to the NOPD’s Investigative Services Bureau Homicide Unit, where he served until his passing.

A native of New Orleans, Hamilton is survived by his wife Sharon, mother, two children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

“We take pause and remember the life of Det. Greg Hamilton, who served this city admirably throughout his 26-year career with the NOPD,” Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said. “On behalf of his NOPD family, we thank him for his dedication and service to the department and to the City of New Orleans. He will be greatly missed. We offer our condolences, love and support to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

A celebration of Hamilton’s life will be held on January 23, 2021 at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of McDonogh 35 High School Auditorium, 4000 Cadillac St. New Orleans. Interment will take place following the ceremony at Mount Olivet Cemetery. 4000 Norman Mayer Blvd., New Orleans. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, those attending are required to wear a face mask and practice social distancing.
