After a three-week investigation, NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigators have arrested Erica Smith Katsanis, (White female DOB: 07/31/1972). She was arrested on Wednesday February 25, 2026 and booked on one count of vehicular homicide (LAR.S. 14:32.1) in connection with the death of Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Olhmeyer.
As outlined in the arrest warrant affidavit, the investigation determined that Deputy Olhmeyer was struck from behind while conducting a funeral escort on January 30, 2026 on Airline Drive. Detectives secured a search warrant, obtained toxicology results and established probable cause for this arrest.
Toxicology results showed a number of prescription drugs in the driver's system at the time of the accident which could potentially cause impairment. Most of the drugs listed had warning labels to include, side effects, safety precautions and legal risks associated with the operation of a vehicle.
In addition, investigators determined that Katsanis did not apply her vehicle brakes at any time during the crash. Traffic Commander Captain Anthony Micheu said his highly-trained fatality reconstruction investigators were extremely diligent in their investigation and looked at video, internal vehicle imaging, witness statements in addition to toxicology reports in determining probably cause for Katsanis' arrest.
This remains a deeply tragic case involving a law enforcement officer who was protecting others when he was killed.
The investigation remains active and ongoing and further toxicology tests are pending. Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is asked to contact the NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit at (504) 658-6205.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
