NOPD Sees Continued Decrease in Crime, Improvement in Response Time in 2024

NOPD Superintendent Anne E. Kirkpatrick today outlined crime statistics for the complete year of 2024 during a press event held at NOPD Headquarters.

“We’ve made significant strides in reducing crime across New Orleans,” Kirkpatrick said, lauding the work of all involved. “The men and women of this police department along with our local, state, federal partners, and strategic reforms have led to notable declines in nearly every major crime category.”

Compared to statistics from 2023, overall crime in the city saw a 26-percent decrease in 2024. Within that figure, crimes against persons saw an overall decrease of 20 percent. These crimes include homicides, which saw a 35-percent respective decrease; non-fatal shootings, which saw a 44-percent respective decrease; armed robberies, which saw a 38-percent respective decrease; and carjackings, which saw a 49-percent respective decrease.

Property crimes also saw a decrease in 2024, showing 27 percent fewer than those in 2023.

Using a five-year average comparison, overall crime in the city fell 23 percent in 2024, while crimes against persons fell by 29 percent and property crimes saw a 22-percent decrease. Notable reductions within these categories include a 66-percent decrease in carjacking incidents and a 53-percent decrease in nonfatal shootings.

Compared to the city’s previous low point for crime in 2019, overall crime in the city in 2024 was 29 percent less than 2019, with crimes against persons down by 14 percent in that same comparison and property crimes down by 32 percent.

In 2024, the NOPD has also enhanced its responsiveness. The year 2024 saw 44,012 fewer calls for service than that of 2021. Additionally, response times improved overall even with a smaller police force. This is credited to strategic officer deployment, notably the Power Watch program piloted in the Seventh District.

“These reductions are the result of hard work of the men and women of this department and the invaluable support of our community partners, all working together to make New Orleans a safer place for all,” Kirkpatrick said. “As we move forward, we remain committed to building upon this progress, addressing challenges head-on, and fostering a safer environment for all. Together, we will continue to honor those we’ve lost by striving for a more secure and united New Orleans.”

Kirkpatrick stressed that while statistics tell a story, keeping in mind the victims in these incidents and their families is also paramount.

“While data showcases our progress and highlights ongoing challenges, we must always honor the real lives impacted by these figures,” Kirkpatrick said. “These individuals are forever woven into the fabric of New Orleans’ story, and our hearts go out to their families and loved ones. We honor their memory, share in your grief, and remain committed to justice and safety for all residents and visitors.”
