NOPD Investigating Homicide of Local Law Enforcement Officer

NEW ORLEANS - The NOPD is investigating a homicide that occurred today (February 26, 2021) in the 3000 block of Higgins Blvd.

At around 6:15 p.m., NOPD Fifth District officers responded to the location after being notified of an officer in danger.  Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, a Tulane police officer and reserve New Orleans 2nd City Court Constable, suffering with a gunshot wound to the chest.  The victim was escorted to the hospital by EMS where he died of his injuries.

The initial investigation has revealed the suspect entered George Washington Carver High School for a basketball game when he got into an altercation with a staff member.  The suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire when the officer, serving as security for the event, tried to escort him out of the building.  The suspect was immediately apprehended and arrested.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of death and release the victim's name, upon completion of an autopsy and notification of family.

NOPD’s Homicide Division is leading this investigation and is being assisted by the Public Integrity Bureau’s Force Investigation Team (FIT).  Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact NOPD’s Homicide Detective Walter Edmond at 504-658-5300.
