The NOPD today (December 18, 2024) released critical incident video from an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred on December 4, 2024, at the intersection of Basin and Saint Louis streets.
At about 6:30 p.m. on December 4, 2024, an Eighth District lieutenant and two Sixth District detectives attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a confirmed stolen vehicle at the intersection of Basin Street and St. Louis Street. Prior to attempting the traffic stop, the lieutenant pulled his marked police vehicle in front of the stolen vehicle as it was stopped at a red light in the left travel lane of Basin Street. As the lieutenant and detectives exited their vehicles and gave the stolen vehicle’s driver commands to exit the vehicle, the driver backed the stolen vehicle into an unmarked police vehicle and moved forward towards the marked police vehicle before turning right between the marked police vehicle and another unmarked police vehicle in the middle travel lane of Basin Street.
As this occurred, the lieutenant discharged two rounds from his firearm at the stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle then struck the unmarked police vehicle and another uninvolved vehicle in the right travel lane of Basin Street before fleeing the scene. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in the 1900 block of Bayou Road.
No injuries were reported in the incident. No arrests have been made as of this writing.
Video of the incident captured by dash camera and nearby video surveillance can be viewed at this link.
