NOPD Announces Preliminary Crime Statistics for August 17-23, 2025

The following is a weekly report of citywide crime statistics compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit for the period of August 17-23, 2025.

Notable arrests made

During the listed week, the NOPD also made the following notable arrest(s):

  • On August 18, the NOPD arrested Damon Garcia (black male, DOB: 08-22-1995) in its investigation of a homicide that occurred on August 10, 2025, in the 2600 block of Jackson Avenue. Garcia was located in the Fourth District and arrested on one count of second-degree murder.
  • On August 22, the NOPD arrested Jose Javier Suazo (Hispanic male, DOB: 05-13-2007) in its investigation of a fatal hit-and-run vehicle crash that occurred on June 14, 2025, at the intersection of North I-10 Service Road and Bundy Road. Suazo was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on charges of hit-and-run driving involving death or serious bodily injury, of reckless operation of a vehicle, obstruction of justice and of falsifying a police report. 

Gun arrests (arrests made under LA RS 14:95 and sub-items)

Year to date, the NOPD has made 190 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. This is a 43-percent decrease compared to 334 arrests made during the same period in 2024.

Gun seizures

Additionally, as of August 24, the NOPD in 2025 had seized 1,236 firearms in criminal investigations, a 21-percent decrease compared to 1,567 such seizures made during the same period in 2024.
