NOPD VOWS, U.S. Marshals Arrest Suspect in Homicide Investigation

The NOPD’s Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals today (August 5, 2021) arrested Mekaill Harris (pictured, black male, DOB: 08-31-1988) in the investigation of a homicide on June 28, 2021 in the 4100 block of Jumonville Street.

At around 4:23 p.m., NOPD Third District officers responded to reports of an aggravated battery by shooting at the location. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds. The first victim was pronounced dead on scene by EMS, while a second victim was transported to the hospital by EMS for treatment of injuries. The deceased victim was later identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office as 24-year-old Tommy Butler.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives developed and positively identified Harris as the perpetrator in this incident and obtained a warrant for his arrest on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Harris was located today by NOPD VOWS officers and the U.S. Marshals and arrested without incident. He was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center accordingly.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Unit Detective Marylou Agustin at 504-658-5300.
