NOPD Investigating Traffic Fatality in Fifth District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred today (August 31, 2021) in the 2500 block of Elysian Fields Avenue that left two people dead and a third critically injured.

At about 3:21 p.m., NOPD Fifth District officers responded to a call of a vehicle crash at the location. Upon further investigation, detectives determined that a Nissan Sentra was traveling south on Elysian Fields Avenue when, for undetermined reasons, it left the roadway and struck a curb. The vehicle entered the neutral ground, struck a tree and came to rest in the left lane. The vehicle was then engulfed in flames.

An adult male victim was ejected from the vehicle and declared deceased at the scene. A second male victim was transported from the scene via EMS to a local hospital, where he was later declared deceased. A third victim - an adult female - was also transported to a local hospital via EMS, when she was listed in critical condition as of this writing.

The Orleans Parish Coroner will officially identify the victims in this incident upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

Traffic Fatality Investigator Edgar Edwards is in charge of the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 504-658-6205 with any additional information.
