NOPD, DHS AND LSP Respond to Two Suspicious Packages Found in the Eighth District

Shortly after 9:30 a.m. today (Aug. 14), NOPD responded to a call of a suspicious package in the 500 block of Poydras Street.

During a routine check of the U.S. Courthouse this morning, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) canine identified on a package found outside of the building. NOPD and Louisiana State Police (LSP) responded and blocked off the area immediately surrounding the building, including Magazine Street, Capdeville and Lafayette streets.  Office workers, pedestrians and individuals parked in the area were asked to shelter in place until the incident could be resolved.

NOPD’s Special Operations Division (SOD) unit responded and deployed the bomb squad to investigate. The DHS canine then identified on a second package located in the building’s trash. The SOD unit utilized a remote robot to investigate both packages and found that neither posed a threat to the public. Streets were reopened to traffic at approximately 12:15 p.m.

If you have any information about this incident please call the NOPD non-emergency number at 504-821-2222.
