The dog days of summer are here, and the NOPD certainly has some four-legged officers who keep the heat on those who choose to break the law in New Orleans.

The NOPD’s Canine Division plays a vital role in the department’s mission to protect and serve the community. The division, housed alongside the NOPD Mounted Division at City Park, is comprised of eight human officers teamed with eight canines, who train consistently to maintain a high level of experience and dedication.

“We help locate the bad guy,” said Officer Harold Chambliss Sr., NOPD’s Senior Master Canine Trainer who has served in the division for nearly 30 years. “No matter where he or she may be hiding, we locate them.”

NOPD’s canines are trained in apprehension tactics, as well as in detecting narcotics, explosives and munitions. Most of the NOPD canines are trained in multiple uses, and form a strong bond with their officer through living, working and training together.
