NOPD Arrests Juvenile Suspects in Fourth District Carjacking Incident

The NOPD has arrested three teenaged juvenile male suspects in the investigation of a carjacking incident that occurred on April 12, 2023, in the 3000 block of Holiday Drive.

At about 5:35 p.m. on April 12, an adult female parked her vehicle in the parking lot of a business in the 3000 block of Holiday Drive, leaving the vehicle running with her two children – a 12-year-old juvenile male and an 11-month-old infant female – in the vehicle while she entered a business. At that time, the juvenile males allegedly approached the victim’s vehicle and pointed a firearm at the 12-year-old victim, ordering him to exit the vehicle. The victim complied, taking the 11-month-old victim and fleeing into the store. The perpetrators are then believed to have entered the victims’ vehicle and pulled out of the parking spot, but then exited the vehicle for unknown reasons. The perpetrators then reportedly returned to the perpetrator vehicle and fled the scene.

The incident was initially reported to be an attempted armed carjacking. Based on evidence obtained through further investigation, the signal for the incident was determined to be an armed carjacking.

As the investigation progressed, NOPD Fourth District detectives learned later that evening that three subjects had been apprehended in the First District in connection with a vehicle found crashed at the intersection of Canal and North Villere streets. The vehicle matched the description of the perpetrator vehicle in the Fourth District carjacking incident and was also determined to have been reported stolen from the 2100 block of Fourth Street in the Sixth District on April 12, 2023.

Two of the three arrested subjects – a 15-year-old male and a 13-year-old male – were positively identified as the perpetrators in the Holiday Drive incident, with the third subject – a 16-year-old male – identified as the driver of the perpetrator vehicle in that incident. The 15-year-old was found to be in possession of a firearm at the time of arrest.

Through further investigation, the 15-year-old suspect was also determined to be involved in two armed carjacking incidents that occurred on February 20 in the First District – one in the 600 block of South Johnson Street and another in the 300 block of South Broad Street. The 16-year-old suspect was also determined to be involved in an auto theft incident that occurred on April 10, 2023, in the 200 block of Henry Clay Avenue in the Second District

The arrested suspects were booked accordingly into the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center on the following charges:

  • The 15-year-old suspect was booked with use of firearm in commission of a robbery and for armed robbery in the Holiday Drive incident; with carjacking in the South Johnson Street incident; with illegal possession of stolen things, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, illegal use of weapons and illegal carrying of a weapon in the 4th Street incident; and with carjacking in the South Broad Street incident.
  • The 13-year-old suspect was booked with use of firearm in commission of a robbery and for armed robbery in the Holiday Drive incident, and with illegal possession of a stolen vehicle in the 4th Street incident.
  • The 16-year-old suspect was booked with use of firearm in commission of a robbery and for armed robbery in the Holiday Drive incident; with illegal possession of a stolen vehicle in the 4th Street incident; and with theft of a motor vehicle in the Henry Clay Avenue incident.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
