NOPD Releases Violent Crime Statistics from First Quarter of 2026

The NOPD today (April 7, 2026) released its violent crime statistics for the first quarter of 2026. These statistics were compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit and are composed of incidents reported between January 1 and March 31, 2026.

Murders

For the first quarter of 2026, there have been 20 reported murders and/or non-negligent homicide incidents in the city. This is a decrease of seven incidents compared to the same period in 2025 (27, this total does not include the victims of the January 1 Bourbon Street terror attack), a decrease of 20 incidents compared to the same period in 2024 (40), and a decrease of 41 incidents from the same period in 2023 (61). For the three-year period, the department has seen a 67-percent decrease in homicide incidents.

Fatal shootings

For the first quarter of 2026, there have been 20 reported fatal shooting incidents in the city. This is an increase of eight incidents compared to the same period in 2025 (12), a decrease of 15 incidents compared to the same period in 2024 (35), and a decrease of 35 incidents compared to the same period in 2023 (55). For the three-year period, the department has seen a 64-percent decrease in fatal shooting incidents.

Non-fatal shootings

For the first quarter of 2026, there have been 45 reported non-fatal shooting incidents in the city. This is an increase of two incidents compared to the same period in 2025 (43); a decrease of 16 incidents compared to the same period in 2024 (61). and a decrease of 59 incidents compared to the same period in 2023 (104). For the three-year period, the department has seen a 57-percent decrease in non-fatal shooting incidents.

Armed robberies

For the first quarter of 2026, there have been 54 reported armed robbery incidents in the city. This is a decrease of five incidents compared to the same period in 2025 (59), a decrease of 17 incidents compared to the same time in 2024 (71) and a decrease of 98 incidents from the same period in 2023 (152). For the three-year period, the department has seen a 64-percent decrease in armed robbery incidents.

Carjackings

For the first period in 2026, there have been 21 reported carjacking incidents in the city. This is a decrease of one incident compared to the same period in 2025 (22); a decrease of 14 incidents compared to the same period in 2024 (35), and a decrease of 42 incidents compared to the same period in 2023 (63). For the three-year period, the department has seen a 67-percent decrease in carjacking incidents.

“As a police department, public safety is always our top priority.” NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said. “These statistics show that what we are doing as a department is working. Our intentional, constitutional policing strategies are creating proven results in lowering violent crime in the city and making our residents and visitors safer. We will continue to employ these strategies as well as incorporating new ones, while we continually assess what is working and what may need adjustment to provide the best quality services we can to the City of New Orleans.”
