The NOPD is seeking assistance from the public in identifying a male subject found wandering in a marsh area near Chef Menteur Highway today (November 27, 2016).

Just before 9 a.m., Seventh District officers were dispatched to the 16900 block of Chef Menteur Highway, near the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge, on a miscellaneous incident call. Upon arrival, officers spoke to two witnesses who described seeing an unknown black male subject leave the boardwalk area of the park and begin walking into the grass toward a marsh area. They said the subject then began to crawl and dig in the wet mud before he moved to another area. With temperatures in the 40s at the time, the witnesses called police out of concern for the subject’s well-being.

NOPD Search and Rescue officers were called to the scene to assist in recovering the individual. Officers were able to locate the individual and return him safely to the shore, where he was then transported by EMS to an area hospital for further treatment.

The subject in this incident is described as a male between the ages of 15 and 20 years old and believed to possibly be mentally disabled, as he is unable to identify himself to police. The individual also had no identifying credentials on his person. A photo of the individual is included with this release.
