Business is booming for local McDonald’s franchise owner Louis Colin. He owns five restaurants in the New Orleans area and he’s gearing up to open a sixth.

“We brought our first McDonald’s restaurant in 2010,” said Colin. “I really feel that education and preparation allowed my wife and I, and my daughter, who is an actual owner, to be successful in this business,” said Colin.

Colin attributes much of his success to the education and preparation he learned as an officer at the New Orleans Police Department.

“One of the things I realized during my time at the NOPD is that everything is transferable,” he said. “As I moved into leadership roles in the department, I realized that some of the tasks I was doing, such as analyzing numbers and deployment, are things that I use on the job today.”

Colin spent 26 years on the force, moving up in the ranks from a Sergeant to a Lieutenant and then District Commander. He also worked in a number of different divisions within the department.

“One thing I loved about the NOPD is that you didn’t necessary have to get stuck in one role or one position,” said Colin.

Colin also took advantage of the department’s higher education incentives and earned an Associate degree, Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree on the job.

“Through education, I was not only benefiting myself, but most importantly, the police department at the time as well,” said Colin.

Although his current role puts him in a different uniform, Colin is still serving his community as a board member of Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans and a host of the department’s newest community engagement program called Coffee with Cops

“You know one of the things about retiring is that you’re still a police officer by heart and you’ll never lose that that’s for sure,” said Colin.
